Fishing SpotsRodrigues: one of the best "multi-fishing" destinations in the world.Rodrigues Island is surrounded by a large continental plateau, with an average depth of 60 meter that extends 21 miles to the west and 10 miles to the east. The entire plateau is covered with numerous spots (small underwater structures) perfect for jigging and bait fishing, such as "Escalier" (the staircase) in the west which is an ideal location for the 'crazy jiggers'. Yann knows this zone very well and has been operating there over several seasons now. He has a perfect command of his electronic equipment (a combination electronic mapping and fish finder). The drop-off is not far from the north, hardly 6 nautical miles. Therefore, we are in action as soon as we leave Port Mathurin. It's hard to go on a fishing trip on the Black Marlin without considering a 2 days-outing to the "Great Eastern Bank" which is situated 50 miles from Rodrigues. We will troll past "Marlin's Boulevard" on the way there and on the return. The Great Eastern Bank has a shallow bottom that ascends from 2200 m to....41 m and extends over nearly 100 km2. The currents raise the nutrients along the drop-off to nourish the fish fodder, which thus attracts the predators that we are looking for. As a matter of fact, Christian Mercier pulled out his record catch of a 104.500 kg dogtooth tuna there while Claude Port was rewarded with two catches of 63.5 kg and 64.5 kg. Professional fishing is barely practiced in these zones, therefore leaving us with the opportunity to fish in virgin waters...but, for how long?
